For those who decide to decorate their apartment with ficus, I will immediately note that the plant is special: if the variety is not dwarf, then over time a lot of space will be required for the flower. From my own experience, I was convinced that it would be necessary to study all the subtleties of care. It is important to know how to water ficus, feed, how to keep the air in the room moist at any time of the year.

What soil did I use to transplant ficus
They usually write about ficuses that they are not capricious and do not require special care. This is only partly true, if you do not follow the recommendations, then the plant will be stunted and weak, it will develop slowly.
When I was presented with rubber ficus, the first thing I wanted to do was to transplant it into a beautiful pot. I had to clarify the issue with the ground. Used, in accordance with the recommendations, special primer, purchased. It is rather loose and the amount of moisture that can accumulate in the pot depends on this factor. The mixture should be moisture-absorbing and have good aeration.
If you use a store-bought universal soil, you will need to add vermiculite and sand, sphagnum moss, coconut fiber, and other rippers. If you prepare the mixture yourself, then you can use high-moor peat as a base.
The bottom of the pot must be laid out with drainage.
General rules for watering depending on the season
When studying the rules for watering ficus, I came across a very fair statement: watering of ficus should be classified as regular, seasonal, and thorough.
Given the importance of the procedure, we will consider each type of watering in more detail. Regularity lies in the fact that water is applied strictly according to the schedule, on a certain day of the week. In addition, once a month, the ficus is given a bath day. The plant is bathed in a shower, the water temperature should be room temperature. Do not forget that the soil in the pot must be covered with polyethylene before starting the procedure.
I included weekly dusting on the leaves as part of my regular hygiene schedule. I use a damp soft cloth to clean the surface of the sheets. Florists claim that the pores on clean leaves are open, this fact helps prevent the development of many diseases.
About seasonality. Special attention to the maintenance of the plant is required both in winter and in summer. In winter, watering can be done less often, it is recommended once every two weeks. But I chose the watering option after 10 days. Due to the fact that very hot central heating batteries dry out the air too much, the soil also dries up too quickly.
A great danger for a plant is the option of heating a room with the use of electric heating devices, which, moreover, "eat up" oxygen in the room.
At any temperature for irrigation, I advise you to use warm, settled water.

What microclimate is it desirable to create indoors
From my own experience, I was convinced that proper watering alone is not enough. To ensure an attractive appearance of the bush, it is important to maintain both water and thermal conditions in the room. Insufficiently humid air, low temperature, or too high, improper watering can cause not only plant disease, but also its death.
To create suitable conditions, I got acquainted with the parameters of the climate of the natural zone in which the ficuses grow. These are the tropics with humid air and a stable temperature without extremes. In summer, it should be from +27 C to +30 C, in winter - from + 20 C to + 22 C. The minimum permissible temperature is + 14 C.
There was no problem with summer temperatures, but in winter our apartment is a little warmer, on average + 25. As far as I felt, my pet does not suffer from excessive heat. Of course, the humidity of the air during this period must be carefully monitored. In summer and winter, I spray the leaves with water from a spray bottle twice a day. I always keep a container with moistened sea pebbles near the flower pots.
The pot with ficus should be located away from windows that open for ventilation in winter, drafts are extremely harmful, prolonged ventilation in cold weather can cause leaves to fall.
I am very glad that this did not happen to me, but I read that leaves can fall off only from the side that is "caught" by the draft and cold.

What threatens excessive soil moisture
If the plant simply needs high air humidity, then problems with watering may arise. In tropical forests, it does not rain constantly, the soil periodically dries up. But the precipitation is plentiful, they moisturize the soil very well, the moisture supply for the plants lasts for a long time.
Too frequent irregular watering can lead to the development of mold in the pot, the roots can suffer from putrefactive processes.
It is difficult to deal with such problems, you will need:
- carefully examine all the roots;
- find and remove rotten ones, disinfect all the rest;
- transplant the plant into a new disinfected substrate.
The bush takes root after such a procedure slowly. My advice is not to pour the ficus, it is extremely harmful for him!
How do I know if a plant needs watering?
Ficus should be watered as the soil dries up, if the dry layer is 3-4 cm, then it's time to water the plant.
Too much water under the ficus plant is harmful, but a lack of moisture and drying out of the soil will lead to the plant dropping its leaves.
The fact that the plant constantly receives less moisture can be guessed by the appearance of a spider mite.
Ficus does not need bright sunlight, if the plant is located in a shaded and not too hot place, then moisture evaporation from the soil occurs slowly. The irrigation schedule should be adjusted taking this factor into account.
Another unpleasant symptom of poor soil moisture is drying of young shoots. Such branches can no longer be restored.
What water do I use for irrigation
The water should be warm, the roots can be stressed from cooling, while the development and growth of the plant slows down.
For watering ficus, I only use settled water. I draw it from the plumbing system. If possible, I use rainwater, or melted water, if there is snow in winter.
Before use, I drain the settled water carefully, do not shake it, the sediment should not rise from the bottom.
Application of mineral fertilizers during irrigation
Like any plant, ficus needs periodic feeding. Since its crown is quite lush and thick, fertilization should be applied abundantly, although not often. I use complex, mineral fertilizers. I carry out top dressing only in spring and summer.
I add them after watering. I follow the frequency of dressings that is recommended on the fertilizer package.
Growing ficus for four years has shown that proper watering and maintaining air humidity are the most important points of care.
