Useful properties of feijoa

The fruits of this plant are a source of vigor and good memory. It is also recommended to use them for weakness and seasonal vitamin deficiency. Thanks to vitamin C, which is contained in the fruit, feijoa is excellent for treating colds. This plant can also be used with a lack of iodine in the body, since its fruits contain 36 mg of iodine per 100 g of its weight. Therefore, the use of feijoa has a beneficial effect on the functioning of the thyroid gland. Due to the fact that iodine is very soluble in water, it is completely absorbed by the human body.

The plant contains many minerals that are so necessary for the human body. The peel of the fruit contains many tannins. Therefore, when an upset stomach occurs, decoctions from dry and crushed peel help well. The antioxidants (catechins) in fruits help prevent tumors. Feijoa also has the following beneficial properties:

  • Preventing the development of cancer
  • Improving attention and memory
  • Strengthening immunity
  • Lowering blood cholesterol levels
  • Renewal of blood composition
  • Increased hemoglobin in the blood
  • Cure atherosclerosis

Feijoa fruits contain a lot of fiber, so they will be very beneficial for the gastrointestinal tract. As for contraindications, they practically do not exist. After all, an allergy to these fruits is very rare. Also, feijoa is not recommended for use in the presence of diabetes mellitus.

Growing at home

Despite the fact that feijoa grows in subtropical conditions, many gardeners successfully grow it in greenhouses, conservatories and even living rooms. Growing a plant at home is done in two ways: from seeds and by cuttings. Seeds for growing are used only from ripe fruits, but by no means from overripe ones. It is also not recommended to take seeds from those fruits that have already been stored for a certain time.

Selected seeds must be washed from the sticky mass in a solution of potassium permanganate. After washing, the seeds must be well dried. The soil for the seeds must be loose and permeable. For the preparation of such soil, a mixture of leafy earth, river sand and high peat is taken. For germination of seeds, not deep boxes are selected.

Video on the formation of the feijoa tree:

Germination time is about a month in winter and two weeks in summer. When four pairs of plants appear, they can already be transplanted. When a plant is propagated in this way, not all maternal qualities can be transmitted. To propagate a plant, you must first cut the cuttings from semi-lignified shoots located in the middle of the bush.

Ready cuttings are placed in a heteroauxin solution before planting. This is done to stimulate the growth of the cuttings. The soil for transplantation is prepared from river sand and humus. For quick rooting, you can use damp sand. When planting, an ordinary flower pot is taken with a ready-made substrate, into which the prepared cutting is deepened.

The depth of its rooting is 2/3 of the entire length. The transplanted plants must be watered and sprinkled with ash (to prevent damage by fungal organisms).

Planted cuttings must be covered with plastic wrap on top. The rooting period for feijoa cuttings is about a month. If grafting is carried out in the fall, then the rooting period will last up to two months.

Feijoa pests and diseases

Feijoa is very vulnerable to being hit by a false shield. When exposed to this pest, leaves and young shoots are mainly affected. Due to the fact that the fruits lose a lot of juice, the plant loses strength and develops poorly. Therefore, as a result, the plant begins to massively shed its leaves. To combat scale insects, a mineral oil emulsion is used.

These works should be carried out before the start of a new growing season. As for mechanical methods of pest control, first of all, soap spraying of bushes is used. This type of cleaning should be carried out at intervals of every five days, for two months.
