Potentilla: Generalities

The name Potentilla is of Latin origin and is composed of the root
potentia, that is power and strength, and from the ending -illa, which is a diminutive; literally, therefore, means great strength in a small flower. The symbolic meaning attributed to the potentilla is that of maternal love; it seems, in fact, that when it rains, the leaves are enclosed above the flower as
to protect it. Always,
furthermore, to potentilla they are
assigned medicinal properties:
the anserine species is used as a tonic; from the tormentilla, extracted from the roots of the potentilla
tormentilla was made into a powerful astringent effective against cholera; finally, the potentilla reptans is considered a good remedy against fever.
